What is Proofreading?

Proofreading is the final quality check in the editorial process.  It is typically performed after the copyedit.  It perfects already polished writing and is the final step before publishing to catch any errors that slip through the copyediting stage.

When proofreading, I check for the following:

  • Correct spelling- misspelled words, proper word usage, and easily confused words (homophones and homonyms)
  • Consistency of capitalization, hyphenation, and punctuation
  • Correct grammar- e.g., subject-verb agreement
  • Repeated or missing words and missing or extra spaces
  • Formatting and typography issues
  • Maintain consistency of layout
  • Run-on sentences and sentence fragments
  • Check graphs, images, tables, charts, links, and illustrations
  • Follows style guide

What this does not include:

  • Handling permissions for copyrighted materials and images
  • Higher-level editing (i.e., line & developmental editing)
  • Rewrite or reorganize sentences or paragraphs

Proofreading Rates: $.03 / per word. Prices are quoted in USD

Examples:

  • 1000 words x $.03/word = $30.00
  • 3000 words x $.03/word = $90.00
  • 5000 words x $.03/word = $150.00

What is Copyediting?

Copyediting is the process of revising written material to improve readability. It ensures the writing is clear and consistent. It focuses on fixing spelling, grammar, punctuation, and usage errors. The goal is to polish and refine your writing, not change its voice and style. Copyediting occurs after developmental editing but before proofreading. It is the second last step before publishing.

When copyediting, I check for the following:

  • Everything included in the proofreading process plus:
  • Correct inconsistencies in language, style, or essential content
  • Consistency of character details and timelines
  • Fix or flag confusing phrases
  • Fix or flag sentences that are repetitive or too wordy
  • Basic fact-checking (e.g., brand name, place name spelling, and dates)
  • Double-check foreign words and idioms
  • Create a style guide (if not provided) to maintain consistency in text, word use, and formatting

Proofreading Rates: $.04 / per word. Prices are quoted in USD

Examples:

  • 1000 words x $.04/word = $40.00
  • 3000 words x $.04/word = $120.00
  • 5000 words x $.04/word = $200.00
